DEFENSIVE PISTOL—LEVEL 1

Defensive Pistol—Level 1 is a ten hour course designed to
provide the experienced pistol shooter with a higher level of
training in the use of the pistol as a combat weapon and provide
an opportunity to practice advanced skills in a safe, supervised
environment. If you want to learn advanced pistol skills and shoot a lot, this is the course for you.
This course introduces a detailed discussion of the Combat Triad
of Mindset, Gun-handling and Marksmanship. The adoption of
the Combat Triad is critical to survival in a true,
life-threatening armed confrontation. The primary focus of
this class is to work to establish high quality gun-handling
skills and dramatically increase your ability to get shots on
target quickly.
After a review of handgun safety rules and basic pistol skills, the
course will provide training in various shooting techniques
including Close Quarters shooting drills, shooting on the move
and shooting from various positions. Other topics covered
in detail will include speed and tactical reloads and
malfunction clearances in an active shooting situation. We
will also explore in detail how to engage multiple targets,
target prioritization, hostage/bystander target situation and
speed-on-target drills. You will also gain experience in
shooting from cover, partner drills and begin to explore the 360
degree awareness necessary to survive real-life shooting
situations. You will also receive an introduction to the
practical skills and issues associated with shooting in low
light / no light environments.
The course is 10 hours in length, delivered over one day of
instruction, generally either Saturday or Sunday.
Participants must be at least 21 years of age and must possess a
valid Arizona Concealed Weapons Permit. Course
prerequisite includes completion of an Advanced Concealed Carry
Techniques course from APDI or completion of a basic course of
Pistol instruction from a recognized firearms training
organization or permission of the instructor.
Required equipment includes eye and ear protection, an
appropriate firearm, a quality, strong-side holster (no fanny
packs, belly bands, shoulder or small-of-back holsters), a
minimum of two spare magazines or speed-loaders, an appropriate
magazine carrier, a high quality flashlight (Surefire,
Streamlight, Pelican, Mag-lite or similar) and at least 500
rounds of ammunition. It is strongly recommended that you
also wear a billed hat, long pants, comfortable shoes or boots
and a sturdy belt that will support the weight of your handgun
and other gear. Knee pads are also highly recommended.
