What some students had to
say about APDI:
Hi Doug,
I hope all is well. The class was OUTSTANDING, it was
a real eye-opener. I came away with not only
knowledge, but also skills that gave me more confidence and
a great sense of achievement. (also, a great sense of
how imperative it is that I practice more). I feel the
material covered was just right for the ability level of the
students. The low light shoot was a new experience and very
beneficial.
I was wondering if there are techniques/tactics/philosophies
regarding a CCW holder or other armed civilian dealing with
a terrorist situation, a suicide bomber, for example.
It makes me mad to even have to pose such a question, but
the world is not the same place it used to be.

Doug, I want to thank you for a well-presented, informative
CCW course. I found it to be very informative. I
appreciated your clearing up my misconceptions on the legal
aspects of using lethal force, even when it is justified.
I really enjoyed the course and plan on taking your level 1
course in the fall when it cools down a bit, ( I don't do
well in the heat).

Doug, I wanted to take a moment to thank you for your work
at Saturday's CCW class. On behalf of myself and my boys,
Alan and Robert, we appreciated your professionalism during
all aspects of the training. I understand the requirements
you must adhere too, and the training while at an elementary
level for us needs to be taught at that level to ensure no
one is left behind. I commend you on how you responded to
the usual questions that arise whenever this type of
training is given. My only surprise was you didn't get
the normal, "can I shoot them and drag the body in the
house" question, though some did come close. While I
won't question the motives of the Arizona legislature and
DPS regarding their design of the class curriculum and
requirements for a CCW; I will say that while you did an
excellent job of squeezing in a great deal of information in
the time allowed I must admit that I have serious doubts
about the ability of some of the students in class to safely
operate and use a firearm in a situation where lethal force
may be necessary and justified. I think training as
you provide through APDI, teaching basic and advanced
firearm handling skills as well as a extensive course on the
legal issues involved should be mandatory before a CCW is
issued to anyone but I guess that is not up to us.
In an industry and sport like firearms it is so common to
see rank amateurs with training methods that are suspect and
feel they can substitute war stories for real knowledge.
Your class is certainly an exception. Well there you
have it, anyway thanks again Doug and if you ever need an
endorsement from a past student feel free to use me....

Dear Doug,
I received my CCW permit in the mail last week and wanted to
give you some feedback on your class. This letter is a bit
late because of a weekend of quail hunting (we shot tons)
and three days of elk hunting (came home empty).
I enjoyed the class and learned a great deal. Also, I
believe my decision to take the basic pistol class prior to
the CCW class was the correct one as it gave me a better
understanding on correct handling procedures. I also
think the state made a poor judgment when they dropped the
number of hours from sixteen to eight. As evidence I would
just offer the number of mistakes made on the shooting range
on Sunday by people who did not attend the first
day—magazines not loaded into firearms, magazines and
bullets dropped on the ground, etc. Other than these
issues, the class was great.
I have given your URL to some hunting friends and they may
contact you for renewal classes in the future. Thanks for
all your help.

Hello Doug,
Thank you for taking the time to make my wife feel welcome
and respected. She was very nervous about taking a
course and shooting with a bunch of men that she didn't
know.
After learning more about equal force to force, I admit that
I have been wrong on occasion in the past by leap frogging
to a higher level of force than was needed. You did a
great job in pointing out some intermediate
choices\deterrents that I\we need to incorporate into our
personal safety program.
We are both looking forward to attending your Basic Pistol
class some time this fall.

Doug,
Thank you for the fine job and effort put forth for our
class. Not easy teaching when it's pushing 110 degrees
outside. When I was researching possible class options
I chose your school because of your credentials. Given
that I was enrolling my wife and daughter as well as myself
in your CCW class I was concerned that the class be taught
by a well qualified individual. To say the least, I
was not disappointed.
Your class was excellent and you can expect to see us again
in the fall for the "Advanced" course. I can't imagine
any instructor doing a better or more thorough job with the
tremendous amount of material to be covered in just 8-hours.
Your presentation is straight forward, to-the-point and very
understandable. It was greatly appreciated.
I want to thank you specifically for your safety
consciousness throughout the class. I have taken other
classes in the past and I have never seen an instructor
personally check every single firearm in the class before
and after range work. You set a tremendous example.
Thank you.

"Doug, I just wanted to let you know that I was impressed with your class. As a student of Self Defense I was impressed with the way you taught the class, the no bullshit approach to CCW, no mall ninja bragging on your part and I especially liked the Dave Grossman stuff. Honestly, I did not expect to enjoy it, coming from a bigger firearms school , and studying from some other well known instructors, I did not expect a smaller school to interest me much, but after taking your class I would put your knowledge and teaching skills right up there with the best of them. If a simple CCW class impressed me, I am excited to take other classes and learn from you. No offense meant at all for underestimating a smaller school like yours, just being honest about how impressed I was."
